    The time is right to join HNTB Corporation!  HNTB is currently seeking a Civil Engineer I in our Arlington, VA office.


    This individual will work in our Transportation Department by performing engineering-related tasks on assigned design projects involving a broad range of transportation and site improvements.  Candidates must have a willingness to perform a variety of civil engineering tasks supporting and working under the direction and supervision of project managers and senior engineers. 


    Job Summary

    Assists assigned department by performing engineering-related tasks including research, development, calculations, design and delivery on assigned project(s).

    Essential Responsibility

    • Contributes to the preparation or modification of reports, plans and designs for projects.
    • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Additional Responsibilities

    Job duties may include, but are not limited to:
    - Developing horizontal and vertical alignments for roadways of all functional classifications
    - Developing templates, surface models, and cross sections for roadways
    - Calculating quantity takeoffs and construction cost estimates
    - Developing multimodal design features, including accommodations for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users
    - Preparing conceptual, preliminary, and final design plans
    - Collecting field data, participating in site visits, and preparing documentation
    - Participating in planning and design projects focusing on transportation infrastructure
    - Interacting with staff representing other technical disciplines, including those associated with the planning and design of bridges, traffic signals, drainage and stormwater management facilities, utilities, airports, toll roads, tunnels, railroads, transit systems, and intermodal facilities.

    Basic Qualification

    Bachelor's degree in Engineering
    1 year relevant experience

    Preferred Qualification/Skills

    - Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
    - Working knowledge of Microstation, Inroads and/or Geopak, MS Word, and MS Excel
    - Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
    - Strong desire to produce high-quality work products that fulfil client needs
    - Detail-oriented team player with an ability to contribute to a positive work environment
    - Ability to work independently and flourish in a stimulating and challenging work environment
    - Interest and complementary experience in drainage design is preferred
    - Participation in professional societies

    General Work Conditions

    Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
