    Overview

    HNTB is currently providing construction management on some of the area’s most exciting and challenging projects – the first light rail to be constructed on a floating bridge, a brand-new waterfront for downtown Seattle, and replacement of a hundred-year-old wooden railroad trestle. We are currently seeking highly qualified construction professionals to serve as Field Technical Specialist I’s supporting the construction of challenging transportation projects in the Puget Sound Region.  The time is right to join HNTB!

    Job Summary

    Inspects and documents individual activities performed by the contractor in order to monitor compliance with specifications, plans, and other contract provisions, as well as state and local regulations. Works closely with experienced field engineers on various field projects in order to develop field experience in techniques, approaches, and procedures and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc.

    Essential Responsibility

    • Gains exposure to construction procedures and methodology by assisting experienced field engineers on various construction tasks.
    • Keeps Inspectors Daily Report of assigned work activities.
    • Performs mathematical calculations for quantity payments using either English or Metric units.
    • Performs basic shop drawing review.
    • Reads and interprets Contractors CPM schedule.
    • Coordinates testing and monitoring services.
    • Coordinates and schedules quality control inspections.
    • Maintains project data documents, including drawings, specifications, test results and reports.
    • Prepares routine reports on construction progress.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Additional Responsibilities

    The Field Technical Specialist I inspects and documents individual activities performed by the contractor in order to monitor compliance with specifications, plans, and other contract provisions, as well as state and local regulations.  She/he will gain exposure to construction procedures and methodology by assisting experienced field engineers on various construction tasks.
     
    - Monitors construction progress to assure compliance with contract requirements and schedule.
    - Prepares Inspector’s Daily Reports.
    - Coordinates and schedules quality control inspections
    - Provides verification of materials.
    - Works with contractor, RE, and client to resolve conflicts in the field.
    - Acts as an on-site liaison between Client, Resident Engineer, and Contractor.
    Assists with preparation of Change Orders.
    - Assists with monthly contractor progress payments.
    - Assists with preparation of project correspondence.
    - Assists with responses to Contractor's correspondence as required.
    - Assists in the review and modification of schedules, specifications, and drawings.
     
    Must have:
    - Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management
    - Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to maintain good working relationships with clients, contractors, management, and coworkers.
    - Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and with mobile devices such as tablet computers.
    - A valid driver’s license and good driving record.
     
    Field Environment:
    - Work frequently requires working at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in a field environment. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment, and doing extensive walking. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use.
    - Depending on the specific project, the job may require climbing to various elevations, ability to bend, twist and turn in close clearances. Select jobs may require work near heavy construction equipment, railroad right of ways, bridges, construction sites, tunnels and airport runways.  Work environment may require use of safety equipment including fall equipment.  Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
     

    Basic Qualification

    Bachelor's degree in Engineering

    Preferred Qualification/Skills

    Professional Engineer and/or Certified Construction Manager

    Field Environment:  Work is frequently performed in a field environment in which there is consistent exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions.  Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use.
     
    Work frequently requires working at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in a field environment.  Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment, and doing extensive walking.
     
    Depending on the specific project, the job may require climbing to various elevations, ability to bend, twist and turn in close clearances, and crawl into confined spaces to perform required work.  Select jobs may require work near heavy construction equipment, railroad right of ways, bridges, construction sites, tunnels and airport runways.  Work environment may require use of construction/inspection safety equipment including fall equipment.  Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
