    The time is right to join HNTB!  We are currently seeking an Electrical/ITS Design Engineer to support rail, roadway, aviation, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) projects throughout the Chicago area.  

    Job Summary

    Within a given discipline, is fully competent to complete engineering-related tasks including research, development, calculations, design and delivery with minimal direction. On tasks basis, is responsible for preparation and completion of discipline engineering efforts that are responsive to project needs.  Coordinates preparation of design details, plans, and drawings within assigned task areas.

    Essential Responsibility

    • Responsible for completion of discipline engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans.
    • Responsible for coordination and productivity of subordinates. Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
    • Works closely with other disciplines and multi-discipline projects.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Additional Responsibilities

    - Demonstrated success in electrical designs involving street, parking lot, and highway lighting
    - Responsible for preparation and completion of electrical engineering designs that are responsive to project needs
    - Coordinates preparation of design details, plans, and specifications within assigned task areas
    - Design electrical aspects of civil infrastructure projects including roadway lighting, airfield lighting, ITS power and communication systems, and power distribution systems.
    - Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of urban corridor traffic signal communication systems consisting of fiber optic and wireless interconnect systems,
    - Flexibility to work at field locations as required by specific project requirements
    - Assist project manager in managing budget and schedule; project communications and documentation.
    - Estimate fees, determine scope of work and assist in preparation of proposals and contracts

    Basic Qualification

    Bachelor's degree in Engineering
    5 years relevant experience

    Preferred Qualification/Skills

    Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering plus 5 years of electrical engineering experience working with ITS power and communication systems required
    Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and PE Certification preferred
    Experience in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
    Experience working on 600V and under Power Distribution
    Experience with fiber optic and network communications
    Experience with roadway lighting and parking lot lighting
    Experience with Illinois DOT complex Roadway Lighting design a plus!
    Familiarity with Electric Code Requirements

    General Work Conditions

    Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
