    HNTB seeking a Transportation Design Engineer III in our Raleigh, NC office to support our growing transportation practice. The successful candidate will work with a team of transportation engineers on many of the largest and most challenging transportation projects in North Carolina.  This position will support the entire transportation project development process. Technical activities may include highway design, traffic analysis, cost estimating, transportation planning, and many other related transportation project development services.  The successful candidate will participate in the production and management of design, analysis, and GEC activities for NCDOT and NCTA.

    Job Summary

    Within a given discipline, is fully competent to complete engineering-related tasks including research, development, calculations, design and delivery with minimal direction. On tasks basis, is responsible for preparation and completion of discipline engineering efforts that are responsive to project needs.  Coordinates preparation of design details, plans, and drawings within assigned task areas.

    Essential Responsibility

    • Responsible for completion of discipline engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans.
    • Responsible for coordination and productivity of subordinates. Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
    • Works closely with other disciplines and multi-discipline projects.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Additional Responsibilities

    - Support the project development process for large multi-disciplined transportation projects.
    - Manage work tasks including supervision, scheduling and quality control of work prepared by others. 
    - Coordinate with other disciplines and project managers.
    - Support related project development efforts, including highway design, traffic analysis, cost estimating, transportation planning, and other related disciplines.
    - Produce and review technical reports.
    - Direct client contact and coordination.

    Basic Qualification

    Bachelor's degree in Engineering
    5 years relevant experience

    Preferred Qualification/Skills

    - Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
    - At least 5 years of experience in traffic engineering design
    - Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering
    - NC PE or ability to obtain within 6 months
    - Strong technical skills and experience
    - Direct experience with applicable NCDOT projects
    - Proficient with Microsoft Office products
    - Excellent written and oral communication skill
    - Proficient with Microstation CAD
    - Cost estimating experience

    General Work Conditions

    Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
