Our practice in the Mid-Atlantic focuses on a range of civil engineering services including highways, bridges, tollways, rail, aviation, construction inspection and management, environmental planning, project controls, program management, and community planning services.

 

The time is right to join HNTB Corporation! HNTB is currently seeking a Transportation Design Project Manager II in our Arlington, VA office to support our growing transportation practice.

Job Summary

Responsible for the leadership and management of team in support of the project’s profitable operation. Responsible for proactively managing the projects technical budget (direct labor and expenses, including technical sub-consultants), schedule, technical requirements, contractual obligations, project communications and HNTB’s 4 for 4 performance: delivery of quality work, on time, on budget and to the client’s satisfaction on every project. Responsible for gross revenue of $5M-$10M.

Essential Responsibility

  • Actively manages project scope, schedule and budget. Serves as the primary client liaison to bring the schedule, budgets and scope of work to completion and to the client’s satisfaction.
  • Performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specification and plan preparation to ensure the most efficient and cost-effective execution of assigned projects.
  • Implements the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project.
  • Develops project scope and fee quotation, and assists in the preparation of proposals and contracts.
  • Coordinates work efforts and reviews of work performed by project team. Supervises and mentors team to overall project objectives.
  • Oversees project staffing with departments, offices and divisions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

Possess, build, and maintain relationships with VDOT and local agency clients in Northern Virginia
Lead and be responsible for business development and sales activities with local agency clients to support the strategic goals of the Office.
Function as a Project Manager and/or Contract Manager to provide multidisciplinary engineering design services on transportation infrastructure projects.
Lead the development of design deliverables associated with multiple technical disciplines.
Lead the design development and/or assist in providing technical direction regarding the scope of projects, technical approach, and design criteria;
Provide senior-level technical expertise and guidance on projects associated with conceptual engineering, detailed engineering designs, preparation of contracts for construction, and construction-phase services.
Review and check engineering work products completed by others through application of a standardized QA/QC program;
Coordinate with clients to define work programs and budgets, provide leadership in project planning and strategy including general oversight and planning, project management, project implementation, and ensuring quality of work products.
Participate in professional activities to develop and maintain client relationships, and advance the strategic interests of HNTB.

Basic Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Engineering
12 years relevant experience
4 years project management experience

Preferred Qualification/Skills

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
Minimum 12 years of roadway design experience in a multidisciplinary engineering environment
Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Virginia required, or ability to acquire licensure within 60 days of hire
Experience working with VDOT required
Experience working on Locally Administered Projects in Northern Virginia required, with experience in a leadership role preferred
Experience working with and knowledge of local transportation agencies in Northern Virginia preferred
Experience managing large transportation projects in excess of $2M in fee
Scope/schedule/fee development and management experience
Strong written and oral communications skills required

Lead and develop strategies for project pursuits to secure work from VDOT and local transportation agencies in Northern Virginia
Directly engage with clients to develop and negotiate scope and fee on task orders and stand-alone projects
Lead a team of professionals and subconsultants to provide consulting engineering services with limited direction to deliver successful, profitable projects
Work with clients to resolve challenges around the development of project planning and construction documents
Complete work accurately and in accordance with engineering codes, ethical standards, and sound business practices
Effectively communicate and coordinate with other team members
Manage, coordinate, and communicate schedule and progress on multiple concurrent tasks
Complete work on time and within budget
Be energetic, self-directed and success-focused
Support staff development through delegation, mentoring, recruitment, and evaluation
Work on behalf of a client during the construction phase to address questions and/or issues that may arise in the field

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
