The time is right to join HNTB! HNTB Corporation is currently seeking a Roadway Construction Inspector III in our Arlington, Richmond, and Virginia Beach, VA offices.


Under guidance and direction of the Resident Engineer, is responsible for daily inspection efforts on complex and/or diverse projects that require construction experience in the construction of roadways and bridges, and performs a variety of assignments. 

Job Summary

Responsible for providing daily inspection of multiple, complex activities within a given discipline/trade performed by the contractor in order to monitor the project compliance with plans, specifications and other contract provisions. Maintains daily logs of inspection work which is assigned and reviews discrepancies or changes with Field Engineer. Performs non-routine and moderately complex assignments normally related to multiple and/or medium to large projects.

Essential Responsibility

  • Monitors work of Contractor against reviewed Project Schedule.
  • Participates in on-site training of staff. 
  • Produces As-Constructed sketches as required.
  • Reads and comprehends contract documents.
  • Keeps Inspector's Daily Report of assigned work activities. 
  • Performs on-site material testing.
  • Performs measurements of completed work to date.
  • Performs complicated mathematical calculations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

- Ability to coordinate with contractors’ staff, communicate effectively with all parties and good interpersonal skills
- Verify the implementation of contract documents
- Produce thorough inspection reports and maintain detailed records of work performed
- Prepares and monitors internal HNTB project controls for field personnel
- Produce and maintain punch list
- Mentoring and training of staff
- Proactively recognizes complex construction or engineering problems and brings to resolution with contractor.
- Proficient in applying standard testing techniques and procedures for the verification of material
- Able to read and interpret complex plans, specifications, and shop drawings. .
- Able willing to work a shift schedule and/or flexible schedules as required to support the workload, as well as in inclement weather, heights, confined spaces and marine environments
- Able to lift 25lbs
- Performs standard mathematical calculations, including trigonometry
- Ability to multitask

Basic Qualification

High School Diploma/GED or equivalent
3 years construction related experience
All required jurisdictional certificates and state requirements

Preferred Qualification/Skills

- High School Diploma or GED required. Four year degree strongly preferred. 
- At least 3 years construction related experience on large scale projects
- Driver’s License
- Proficient use of  Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience working on VDOT projects; prior experience in the Hampton Roads District preferred
- Working knowledge of VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications, Road and Bridge Standards, Construction Manual and Inspector Manual
Preferred certifications:
- DCR Erosion and Sediment Control
- OSHA 10 Hour Safety Training
- Nuclear Gauge Safety Training
- VDOT Asphalt Field
- VDOT Flagger
- VDOT Guardrail  (GRIT)
- VDOT Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field
- VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control
- VDOT Pavement Marking
- VDOT Slurry Surface
- VDOT Soils & Aggregate

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
