The time is right to join HNTB Corporation!  HNTB is seeking an Office Leader who will be responsible for the driving and managing the profitable operation of HNTB’s Chicago, Illinois area. 


As the Chicago Office Leader, you’ll be leading a most highly respected team of your peers that live out the HNTB’s Leadership Characteristics, most importantly VISION.  Through your leadership and collaboration, we will achieve our goal of maintaining HNTB’s clear reputation as the leader in the Transportation Industry.  In this role, you will be partnering with several key groups of leaders as seen in the organizational structure to help further develop and grow our Chicago Practice.  



Job Summary

Manages a large branch office with 100 or more employees. Responsible for gross revenue of $25M+.

Essential Responsibility

  • Responsible for the profitable operation of an office, including business development and revenue generation, client contact, oversight of office operation, cash management and overhead.
  • Ensures the achievement of short and long-term goals for operations, workforce planning, financial performance and growth.
  • Responsible for marketing the firm’s services, acquiring and signing contracts, and serving as the firm’s responsible contact with specific clients.
  • Directs all activities of the office including budgets, sales, cash management and overhead management.
  • Acts as Practice Builder to provide leadership in planning, directing and implementing an aggressive marketing/business plan to leverage existing relationships and develop new relationships to get additional work.
  • Serves as client/project manager for major clients and provides leadership to staff assigned to the projects.
  • Builds a strong and effective team based upon the principles of leadership and empowerment.
  • Attracts experienced staff members, who bring client relationships, strong technical credentials, and a solid reputation.
  • Manages/expands existing client relationships and pursue new client relationships.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

Lead the development and execution of the strategic direction to achieve sustainable, profitable growth.
Lead the day to day operations and P&L.
Achieve 10% year-over-year growth in Sales, Revenue, and Earnings.
Provide leadership to develop team members to work collaboratively and in alignment with the division and office strategic and business plans.
Develop Office Leader successors and ensure that the office management team members are also developing successors.
Drive key recruitment and work sharing opportunities through partnering with the Human Resources and Talent Acquisition teams to ensure the operations are staffed at optimal levels to meet or exceed goals and objectives, while reducing turnover and planning for future needs.
Recruit and attract key talent to HNTB – lined leaders, management team members, client service leaders, practice builders as well as others.
Be a champion for HNTB standards of performance while continually leading improvement of processes and establishment of new processes.
Responsible for the hiring, supervision, development and evaluations of staff members, as well as establishing and approving budgets for the group. Direct reports typically range from 8 -12.

Basic Qualification

Bachelor's degree
15 years related experience

Preferred Qualification/Skills

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning or related degree required
15 years of progressive project/program management, business development and department/group leadership experience in civil infrastructure required
Registered Professional in civil engineering (P.E. Illinois), architecture or urban planning preferred
Excellent client management skills
Excellent relationship building and listening skills
Active in relevant professional and business organizations
A proven track record of success

General Work Conditions

Office Environment: Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently, and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use.
