The time is right to join HNTB Corporation!  HNTB is seeking a Force Account Field Inspector in our Tarrytown, NY project office location.


The primary responsibility of the Force Account Field Inspector will be tracking and verifying Force Account documentation in the field for work tied to the numerous Design-Builder (DB) disputes/claims as well as merited extra work changes. This position will work within the Commercial Group but will work primarily in the field in a roaming manner across numerous daily work operations.

Job Summary

Responsible for providing daily inspection of multiple, complex activities within a given discipline/trade performed by the contractor in order to monitor the project compliance with plans, specifications and other contract provisions. Maintains daily logs of inspection work which is assigned and reviews discrepancies or changes with Field Engineer. Performs non-routine and moderately complex assignments normally related to multiple and/or medium to large projects.

Essential Responsibility

  • Monitors work of Contractor against reviewed Project Schedule.
  • Participates in on-site training of staff. 
  • Produces As-Constructed sketches as required.
  • Reads and comprehends contract documents.
  • Keeps Inspector's Daily Report of assigned work activities. 
  • Performs on-site material testing.
  • Performs measurements of completed work to date.
  • Performs complicated mathematical calculations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

- Primary responsibility will be to track and monitor the DB's construction operations and quality activities that are being documented by the DB on MURK system to support their disputes/claims as well as merited changes;
- Interface with both Thruway oversight personnel as well as DB construction and quality teams to resolve and establish accuracy and appropriateness of daily force account documentation;
- Produce thorough inspection reports and maintain detailed records of work performed;
- Attend meetings and briefings; providing other advice and assistance;
- Produce as-constructed schedules and progress trackers based upon site monitoring and documentation;
- Plan and conduct tasks requiring the evaluation, selection, substantial adaptation and modification of standard construction engineering techniques, procedures and criteria;
- Review submittals for conformance with the construction contract documents, and act as a technical liaison between contractor and design engineering staff;
- Coordinate with the DB, Authority operational staff, and other Stakeholders to facilitate the construction of the Facilities and Utilities while supporting ongoing Authority and local municipal operations;
- Use good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all parties.

Basic Qualification

High School Diploma/GED or equivalent
3 years construction related experience
All required jurisdictional certificates and state requirements

Preferred Qualification/Skills

- Associates Degree with concentration in construction or civil technology; or equivalent experience (4 year degree preferred)
- Experience in the NYSDOT/NYSTA recordkeeping areas
- 5+ years of office, industrial and maintenance facility construction in a large project environment including structures, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, finishes, security systems and construction code compliance, preferred
- Sub-code certifications, desirable
- NICET Level III or IV
- Bridge or highway construction experience, desirable
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- OSHA 10 or 30 Hour Training, or ability to obtain upon hire
- SWAC or TWIC, or ability to obtain these security credential upon hire

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
