Overview

The time is right to join HNTB Corporation!  HNTB is currently seeking a Wetland Scientist / Permitting Specialist in our Boston or Chelmsford, MA office locations.

 

Applies a sound knowledge of the principles and theories of geology, soil science, hydrology, chemistry, biology, botany, ecology or other related sciences to analyze the potential effects a project may have on the environment and/or the potential effects the environment may have on the design and construction of a project. Participates in moderate to complex projects or all level of project/program difficulty and/or may be responsible for an assigned phase of project or program.

Job Summary

  • Skilled in geological, soils, hydrological, biological, botanical, ecological or other scientific conditions related to the natural environment for determining presence of such natural features such as wetlands conducting impact assessments, and designing plans and programs to offset impacts.
  • Participates in design and planning stage of project to interpret contract plans and specifications as well as discuss potential problems relating to site environmental conditions and quality control.
  • Reviews and evaluates technical reports and plans and provides approval of scientific aspects of proposed projects such as construction of railways, highways, bridges and various other structures.
  • Collects, analyzes and reports on geological, hydrological, biological, botanical, ecological or other scientific conditions at the proposed project site to identify the impact on the environment in the construction of highways, railways or bridges.
  • Determines the environmental suitability of the project site for proposed use.
  • Provides technical advice and assistance to project engineers on specific geologic, hydrologic, biologic, botanical, ecological or other scientific aspects and their impact on the specific phase of construction.
  • Reviews and evaluates the potential impact of Federal, state and local environmental regulations.
  • Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies or to develop information and interpret findings.
  • Keeps current with trends, literature and new developments in ecology and environmental science.
  • Prepares permit applications for clients including those required for the MA WPA, Ch. 91, Sections 401 and 404 of the CWA, and others. 
  • Contributes to analysis and documentation under NEPA and MEPA with respect to natural resources.
  • Prepares and participates in public information meetings and hearings.

Essential Responsibility

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or related field plus 4-6 years of related experience. Master's degree in the Natural Sciences listed previously plus 2-4 years related experience desired.

Certifications:

  • PWS or ability to obtain PWS within one year of hire.
  • Certified wetland delineator – state/federal.

 

 

Environment and Physical Requirements: Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to unpleasant and/or hazardous working conditions. Work is also performed outside at the job site and in natural environments delineating and evaluating wetlands and other natural features, and may include proximity to active transportation. Incumbent to have the ability to traverse remote natural areas, carry basic tools and equipment, hand-dig soil tests, stand and sit frequently throughout an eight-hour period, reach vertically for overhead use as well as horizontally.
